Pattern baldness is a condition which effects both men and women, although male pattern baldness is more common and pronounced.

For both men and women, pattern baldness is caused by a gradual shrinkage in the size of hair follicles over time, resulting in the thinning and eventually the disappearance of individual hairs. This results in patterns of baldness across the scalp that usually begins with a receding hairline followed by an “M” shape and eventually a “U” shape around the sides of the head.
With hair being a massively important part of our appearance and our cultural identity, it is little wonder why American’s spend billions of dollars each year to try and treat their baldness. This can range from pills and creams to surgeries with lasers and transplants.
But before you go off and drop a few months salary on a costly procedure, have a closer look at a few home remedies for pattern baldness which could help you on the cheap.

When It Comes To Treating Thinning Hair At Home, Start Simple
It turns out there are a lot of home remedies to help treat or reduce the symptoms of pattern baldness. Here are some of our favorites that are super easy to implement. Definitely give these a try.
Scalp Massage With Coconut Oil
Something as simple as a scalp massage can help combat pattern baldness. The process of scalp massage can be further aided by the addition of an additive such as coconut oil. Coconut oil is also available as a supplement.
Studies have shown certain oils to be beneficial for the health of existing hair as well as the scalp and hair follicles themselves. They work by making existing hair healthier and promoting the growth of new hairs. Another simple solution is massaging the scalp with a shampoo specifically designed to stop hair loss and regrow hair.
Vitamin Supplements
In addition to direct topical approaches like scalp massage and coconut oil application, lifestyle and dietary considerations should be kept in mind. Several vitamins are important to maintain healthy hair and combat pattern baldness.
Studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency can contribute to hair loss, and although vitamin B is oft-cited as having a role in baldness, a 2009 study could not find a link between vitamin B and pattern baldness. This unique blend of 19 different vitamins works well for those with thinning hair.
Lifestyle Changes
An intriguing study conducted on 92 identical male twins from 2009-2011 provided some interesting results on male pattern baldness. The results of the study indicated that smoking, drinking four or more alcoholic beverages a week, the presence of dandruff, the amount of stress experienced, and the amount of caffeine consumed all resulted in increases in hair loss. Interestingly, men who spent more money on products designed to prevent hair loss suffered more hair loss! This is likely a result of their stress being reflected in their spending habits, with stress being a known contributor to hair loss.
This study also related “increased exercise duration” to more hair loss. This is an interesting conclusion given that exercise is often cited as an important preventative measure.
The study also concluded that daily hat use and higher testosterone levels were important factors for decreasing hair loss. This latter fact seems somewhat at odds with the studies claim that increasing exercise duration could be negative, especially given the well-documented fact that exercise increases testosterone levels.
Dietary Changes
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, there are quite a few supplements which can be helpful in your quest to combat hair loss. Recommending a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in refined foods, sugars, and red meats, their dietary recommendations are well-rounded for general health.
In terms of supplements recommended to specifically combat pattern baldness, the University suggests Saw Palmetto and Ginkgo Biloba, two herbs widely used for their various beneficial health effects. Both are available as topical solutions and as a supplement.
